If you have ever found yourself binge-watching a good BBC mystery and wishing you could step right into that foggy, gaslit world, Natalie Brianne has done exactly that... and then turned it into a novel.

Natalie is the author of The Pennington Perplexity, a gripping historical mystery with just the
right sprinkle of romance and a whole lot of heart. But before we get to her story (and her unforgettable detective who can’t remember anything), let’s rewind a bit and get to know the woman behind the mysteries.
Natalie has always been fascinated by people, their stories, their cultures, and the places that shape them. That is why, instead of studying English or Creative Writing like most aspiring
authors, she earned a degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities from BYU. She wanted to understand the “why” behind humanity to walk the same cobblestone streets as her characters and see the world through their eyes. In fact, much of her debut book was written while she lived at 27 Palace Court, London, quite literally walking through Victorian-era inspiration every day.
Today, Natalie is not just a writer but a multi-genre storyteller, with six books and three novellas (and counting). When she is not crafting historical intrigues or weaving threads of science fantasy, you will probably find her sketching, plotting her next story, or, like any true creative, trying to keep her cat from typing on her keyboard. (Every writer’s cat seems to
think it is a co-author, doesn’t it?)
A Detective Who Can’t Remember... and a Story You Won’t Forget
The Pennington Perplexity takes us back to 1870 London, where Mira Blayse is determined to uncover the truth behind her parents’ mysterious deaths. Along the way, she keeps bumping into a man named Byron Constantine, who—oddly enough never remembers meeting her. Turns out, he is a detective with anterograde amnesia, and together they unravel secrets that tie their lives to a shadowy secret society.
It is a story about memory, identity, and the thin line between truth and secrecy, but also about how our past shapes who we are. For Natalie, this book is not just fiction; it is personal. She began writing it not long after losing her father to cancer, and through the pages, she found a way to process her grief and rediscover herself. “Writing it helped me navigate my loss in unexpected ways,” she says. That emotional thread, grief, memory, and the search for truth, is what gives The Pennington Perplexity its depth. It is not just about solving a mystery; it is about healing through storytelling.
How One Idea Sparked the Entire Series
Like many great stories, this one began with a single spark. A friend once joked about a detective with short-term memory loss an idea that stuck in Natalie’s mind like glue. Later, while gardening with her mom, she mentioned it again, and her mom loved it so much that Natalie decided she had to write it. That “one little idea,” as she puts it, ended up launching her entire author career.
Fast-forward to today, and The Pennington Perplexity has become the first book in an ongoing series that now spans four novels, with a fifth already in the works. Each one dives deeper into the themes of identity, memory, and the truths we carry, making it clear that Natalie isn’t just writing mysteries. She’s exploring what makes us human.
If you love clever mysteries, rich historical settings, and characters who feel as real as your best friend, Natalie Brianne’s world is one you’ll want to get lost in. Just... maybe keep your cat off your keyboard while you read.
